Just curious after watching the wooden bat tourny in sunman last weekend. Why did you guys protest the other teams catcher? Was he playing on two different teams? I know the end result landed 3 players from the opposing team being escorted out of the tournament by police

Honestly, I feel like a douche bag for being a part of it. I wish it never happened.

lol yeah i think a lot of people were a little upset. I know a lot of people there (including myself) were really looking forward to seeing the pitching matchup of shannon vs kelly. I was just curious what the reason was. I wasn't sure if the catcher was playing on multiple teams?? I think he had a seminoles shirt on maybe??

When did this happen? I left around 6'ish (I think) after we, the Koks, lost to "something Shell." Guess I missed the fireworks. First time playing out there in this. Had a good time!

Actually it was made known to us that they were short players & were looking at a forfeit, so they called some guys that weren't on the roster they turned in prior to the first game. It was made clear to put anyone you wanted on the roster but do not use a player that you didn't list.
Add to that a cash payout to the top 3 teams & some heat of the moment decision making & you get what we got.
I was given 2 seconds to decide. I'd wish I could say I stand behind my decision.........

When there is a cash payout involved it changes the dynamic. Rules are made for a reason. But every situation is different I guess.

just to let u know we would have never forfit we were ready to play with 9 i dont know who or where that came from...i could understand a protest if he was pitching but he was catching ,that tourny was a open tourny with pickups on everyteam.I can understand the protest because cash but 1 player wouldnt have won or lost that game for our team it all just made us look stupid that 3 of our guys got escorted out by the police for tryin to get there point across...and I myself was lookin forward to kelly vs shannon to...im not havin any hard feelings for secret service we talked to several of there guys after the game and they said they did not want to protest the game

I agree.......it was a bad decision. I've been sick about it since it happened.

I'll take the blame.
The simple facts:
Youngbloods had 20 names on their roster, and still felt compelled to play someone that wasn't on that list.
We ran with 10 guys almost all day long because we were following the rules. Would have been great to have some fresh legs for game 5 on the day, but we couldn't call anyone that wasn't on the roster we turned in.
My coach asked us to stand by the decision when it was made, and whether he does or not, I still do.
Why should a team that follows the rules have to keep their mouths shut when all of a sudden new players start showing up for the "money games?" Why are there rules if the teams that follow them have to feel bad about expecting them to be enforced? Why should an "off duty" umpire (who just happened to be one of the players in question) come up to us and say "I umpire at such and such park and you better ask to have me moved to another field if I ever get you guys" in a situation like this? Which is a bigger "bitch move?" bringing in upper level players late in a cash tournament that aren't on the roster, or calling a team out for doing it? Why does it matter what matchup "everyone wanted to see?"
I've got no hard feelings toward any of the Youngbloods guys, I talked to quite a few after the game, and quite frankly, we were so tired, they probably WOULD have beaten us with 9. I guess they probably SHOULD have beaten us with 9, and none of this would have mattered.

I don't think they brought the guy in because it was a money game, I think it was more just to have ten guys on the field. Oh well, it was a tourney put on for a good cause....enjoy your winnings.

I think the main reason everyone wanted to see Kelly vs Shannon is because you had two local Indiana teams with two of the better pitchers in the city as pickups. Most of the people at the FESTIVAL / tournament knows each player from the Youngbloods and Hoosier Liquior team. It made for a really good matchup for us drunk Hoosiers in attendance. Rules are rules I agree......but a fundraiser tournament did not need to get that ugly.
Nothing against secret service...I think you guys always handled yourself with class and are a good group of guys. We hoosiers just take pride in our local teams and wanted some good entertainment while getting hammered in the stands. Watching hoosier liquior bury everyone just kind of put me to sleep

I have known Dave almost my entire life and I know he would much rather settle things on the field instead of by protest, but the fact of the matter is, it meant either winning money or going home empty handed after 12 hours at the ballpark. 90% of the teams out there would have done the same thing. Are you going to tell me that if you were at Nationals, Worlds or even an NIT with travel money and you knew a team picked up players that weren't on their roster, you wouldn't protest?
I realize this was a "fun" tournament and the majority of the players are local Indiana guys that all know each other, but there were rules in place and they should be followed.

I, JJ, wanted to clear one thing up on this issue. I was the player who was protested. I had no problem with Secret Service protesting or anyone else protesting for anything, rules are rules and they should be followed. I was called by my brother-in-law and asked to come in and fill-in, so I did. Here is the issue that I need to clear up, I did go over after the game and after learning of the protest and told them, I had no problem with them protesting. I think the game should have been stopped at the time of the protest but that was a cluster, and no fault of Secret Service. I also told them that if I did have them in a game that it would be a good idea if I went to another field, but I think they got the wrong message. I said this for both our benefits, because as far as I am concerned I have no issue with them protesting, but I can easily see (and this has happened before and it is the nature of being an umpire and player) myself umpiring one of their games and a close calls go against them, I can hear it already, "he is getting back at us for protesting." I hope this wouldn't be the case, but experience says otherwise. On a personal note, my wife and kids were ready to go home so it worked out for the best.

thanks... I definitely misunderstood the meaning behind what you said to us that evening... life goes on. I was hoping the whole issue would never make it to the message boards, because as far as I was concerned it was over and done with.

If you fart loud enough, it will make it to the boards. Sad...but true.
