I wish Tom could start everything Friday night and try to get everything in a Kolping and use Triple Creek during the day on Saturday. Going to Expressway kills what the Schutzenfest tournament is about... Beer, the festival and softball!

Going to Kolping (lately) and sitting around staring at empty fields also kills what this tournament is supposed to be about.

Agreed, but in my experience this year it's been very bad...twice.

Been right there with you. Tough showing up for tournaments with zero umpires. I will say that Tom and his staff have done a great job mitigating problems when they have arose.

Here I go bronzing again, but here is my .02

Kolping has done an outstanding job with the tournaments that we have played in this year. We had a situation two weeks ago where an umpire no called/no showed. We sat around for over an hour and Tom was scrambling to find a replacement. I don't blame Tom or his staff for that. A grown man didn't show up for work, Period. Unfortunately, that happens on a daily basis in all types of industry.

As far as the parks having issues filling tournaments and leagues, it isn't just at Kolping. All of the parks are struggling to fill spots. The game has priced itself out of many peoples budgets and honestly, there are fewer and fewer young players breaking into this game. I bet you that if you took the average age of teams from 10 years ago and compared them to today, there would be an average age increase of 8-10 years. Kids aren't coming out like we did when I got started. 18-20 year old kids are doing other things with their time rather than playing softball.

I thought the final decision was he IS starting it on Friday night? You could get 18 games in (3 fields with game times of 6:10, 7:10, 8:10, 9:10, 10:10, and 11:10). 3X6=18......Miami Business degree at its finest! This will avoid teams having to play 10 games on Saturday at Triple Creek and only being at Kolping if you reach the semi-finals or losers bracket finals! Makes way too much sense!

Also, not sure if you got word on what happened, but understand that there was a little more than just a grown man didn't show up for work.........the umpire in question had a wife suffer a heart attack that morning. Pretty sure calling the park right away was the furthest thing on his mind at the time. The umpire that was coming to replace him, got a flat tire on Hamilton Ave. and Tom sent someone to pick him up just to get him to the park to umpire. Tom did everything he could with the situation that occurred. This is coming from someone who didn't leave the park that night until 4:15am, but wasn't upset because of the circumstances. Just an FYI......

I didn't know the situation and we were not informed of that, so I apologize if my comment seems harsh. I agree with you that calling the park would be the furthest thing from my mind as well. As I stated, I don't blame Tom for any of that and I hope that the umpire and his family are doing well.

Unfortunately, I have seen NCNS way too often so our assumption was that was indeed the case. Like I said, Tom did everything he could to rectify the situation including having Sandman step in and help until another umpire could get there. In no way am I trying to offend anyone, we were not informed of the situation and this is the first I have heard of it.

Worst part is that the 3 innings that Sandman umpired, were the best 3 innings we have had umpired this year. FACT!!

This I think is a "real" problem with Umpiring for Slo-Pitch. From what I hear and know, a lot of the "better" or "best" umpires are also players....With that being said im sure the availability for those guys is limited especially for the "bigger tournies" because in those they are participants a lot of the time.

I figured you had not heard what happened. No biggie, I didn't think your comment was harsh at all nor were you offending anyone......I just wanted to inform people of the situation!

That is part of the problem but wouldn't be as magnified had a lot of the older umps not realized you make more $ and put up with less shi+ umpiring youth baseball & girls fastpitch.

I know a lot of good umpires that have left slowpitch all together because they feel the shi+ you deal with isn't worth $20 a game. I agree but love the sport so I just suck it up and eject people :)

So here we go again, the deadline approaches and still no answer. If you want to keep business, you should answer your customers questions. Where will the e be played, at kolping or,another park?
I believe Expressway was an overflow for the E last year. On this year's schedule at Expressway it has D overflow listed but seems like it did last year too.
