Joseph Chevrolet Escapes Heat, Josseppis For SSUSA World Title In Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nv.–In 95 degree heat Joseph Chevrolet men’s 75 + Major softball team captured the SSUSA World Tournament October 1-4, tripping up Josseppis of Seattle, Wa. in a double-finals to wrap up the title.
It all started with four seeding games with Joseph claiming three victories against one loss. Joseph out-slugged Fairway Ford from California 22-18, then battled past D-99 from California 18-15. Powerhouse San Francisco Seals, who were undefeated on the season, derailed Joseph 17-14 in game three. Joseph went on to knock off the California Sun Shine Boys 18-5 to complete pool play.
Heading into double-elimination bracket play, number four seeded Joseph Chevrolet brushed aside the Texas Legends 20-14. Next came the heavily favored San Francisco Seals, who had given Joseph there only loss in bracket play, and this time the Seals triumphed again by a score of 25 to 12.
Now in the losers’ bracket, Joseph met the Texas Legends once again, and this time sent the Texas team packing with a 25-18 pounding. That lifted Joseph into the losers’ bracket finals for yet another match-up with the Seals. Finally, after two previous setbacks, Joseph rose to the occasion and defeated the mighty Seals 20-14.
That pitted Joseph against an undefeated Josseppis from Seattle, Wa. for the title. The Cincinnati team proved up to the challenge, double-dipping Josseppis 15-8 and 20-17.
The pair of wins over Josseppis capped off an eleven-game, four-day marathon for the champions, who outlasted a strong field in 95-plus degree heat.
Most Valuable Player honors went to Vinnie Remson (.900). Named to the All-American team were Jim Spelbrink (.870), Frank Vargo (.816), Bill Yeager (.811), and Duffy Stone (.674).
