Bash For Cash, USSSA NIT’s And Qualifiers, Special Events Highlight 2010 Kolping Park Calendar; Season Opener Boasts $30,000 Awards Package

Mt. Healthy, Oh.–The 8th Annual “Bash For Cash,” several USSSA National Invitational Tournaments, an abundance of Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning USSSA qualifiers, and several special events will highlight a thirty weekend Kolping Park softball tournament calendar for 2010.

Kolping, which is conveniently located at 10303 Mill Road in Mt. Healthy, is known for its “family atmosphere,” and offers free admission for players and spectators to all league and tournament games.  The park features three lighted diamonds with 300 foot fences, scoreboards, time clocks, sprinkling system, large restrooms with showers, indoor concessions, video games, children’s playground, volleyball courts, and a large parking lot.

Last year the park’s large pavillion was enclosed and converted into a sports bar and grill, which park manager Bill Chard says was “well-received.

“A lot of our patrons used it,” says Chard.  “It was an outdoor bar for six years and pretty much sat empty.  Nobody used it, and now it’s being used.”

Chard says the sports bar is heated, and eventually will be air-conditioned.  “We’ve also added a full liquor license, so we’ll be a full-service bar now,” says Chard.

Kolping Park will rework its infields again for 2010 “to keep the ultimate playing surface in this area,” notes Chard.

“We’re adding six tons of infield conditioners to each field to reduce rainouts,” he says.

Last year, Kolping went through a major infield renovation.

“We gutted the infields and brought in new dirt and added pro choice field conditioner similar to the same mix used at Great American Ball Park,” says Chard.

Chard, the former manager of Riverstar Park who was hired by Kolping last year, describes Kolping as a “clean park with a family-friendly atmosphere and a well-trained umpire staff.

“We made a huge improvement in our officiating last year,” says Chard.  “We had a lot of training and it was reflected on the field.  We got nothing but compliments most of the year.”

Kolping Park’s 2010 tournament program kicks off on March 12-14 with the second largest event in Greater Cincinnati, the 200-plus team “Bash for Cash.”

Now entering its 8th season, the Bash for Cash offers WSL men’s A-B, men’s C, men’s D and men’s E divisions, and USSSA Men’s C-D, D-E and Women’s C-D NIT’s and a U-Trip Men’s E World qualifier.  Last year’s tournament facilitated 220 teams.

So what’s the attraction?

“Being early in the year, guys have cabin fever and the itch to get out and play,” explains Chard.  “We usually attract teams from a 14-15 state region.  Usually in mid-December I’ll only have two or three teams signed up, but this year I’ve already got over thirty teams entered.”

Another big draw, says Chard, is the Friday night home run derby.

“There were approximately 2,000 people there last year on a thirty degree night.  This year’s home run derby will be dedicated to the memory of J. C. Phelps, and J. C.’s wife and family will be in town for the weekend,” says Chard.

While the lures of being a pre-season tournament and a WSL and USSSA World qualifier are significant, obviously the biggest inducement for the Bash for Cash is – of course – the cash.

“We’re giving away approximately $30,000 in cash and prizes,” boast Chard.

In addition to its three “Bash for Cash” USSSA National Invitationals, Kolping will also host three other NIT’s during the 2010 season.  These will include the Bud Light-Commie Currens Women’s B-C-D-E on May 1st, the Bud Light-Mixed C-D-E on May 8th, and the Bud Light-Men’s C-D NIT on July 19-20.

A bounty of USSSA Men’s C, D and E state-national qualifier round robins have been scheduled for various Saturday mornings and evenings and Sunday mornings.  Each tournament will offer U-Trip C, D and/or E state and national berths and travel expense based on teams.  Some will offer cash prize money, paid berths or apparel.

A championship series comprised of twelve different dates from Kolping’s Saturday night qualifiers called the “Miller Lite Saturday Night Round Robin Series” offers teams a sponsorship worth an incredible $3,000.

“Teams can accumulate points not only for USSSA but also Kolping points, and the regular season champion will earn a $500 Kolping sponsorship for 2011,” says Chard.  “And the top sixteen teams come back for a ‘Tournament of Champions.’  The winner of that receives a $3,000 Kolping Park sponsorship, including $1,500 towards leagues or tournaments, and $1,500 for a custom set of uniforms.  We’ll also throw in a paid USSSA World berth if they play in all twelve of the tournaments.”

Two popular holiday offerings – the Memorial on May 29-30, and the Firecracker on July 2-4 – will also offer USSSA state and national berths.  The Memorial is a four-game guarantee tournament, and the Firecracker is a three-game guarantee with a $500 cash purse for each division.

The Ohio USSSA District XV Men’s Class D championship slated for June 26 also offers a $500 cash prize and state and national berths.

Another landmark event at Kolping in 2010 will be the 83rd Annual Schutzenfest Festival D National/E World Qualifier July 16-18.

“This is a D-E Super cash qualifier with a five game minimum and features a paid D National and E World berth,” says Chard.  “We’re also giving away $1,000 cash to the winners and $500 to the runners-up.

“But what really makes this tournament unique is the festival atmosphere and the awards.  Over 15,000 people attended the festival last year, and we’re giving away fifteen authentic German bier steins to the highest finishing D and E teams.”

Chard says the tournament is limited to 32 teams, and last year turned away 29 teams.

“Teams should not wait to enter,” he says.  “We were full five weeks before the tournament last year.”

The following weekend – July 23-25 – Kolping will be hosting the WSL Midwest World Championship.

“This can be used as an ASA Metro Tune-Up since WSL uses ASA rules,” says Chard.  “And the prize package will be over $30,000, including World Championship rings.”

A private event, the Turner Construction National Tournament, will be played a week later on Saturday, July 31st.

“Turner Construction has offices throughout the country and each city has its own team,” explains Chard.  “They go watch a Reds game on Friday night and play for the Turner Construction National crown on Saturday, then fly home on Sunday morning.”

What kind of experience can teams expect playing in tournaments at Kolping Park?

“A good competitive field of teams, quality umpiring staff and excellent field conditions,” answers Chard.  “And there is no gate fee and the events are professionally run.  And, teams will get their USSSA points the next day in most cases.”
