Syracuse, NY.–Joseph Chevrolet 65-Seniors battled past Cleveland 65 14-12 in the championship game to capture first place in the SSUSA National Tournament August 3-5 in Syrcacuse, NY.

The victory wrapped a 5-2 weekend for the champions, who bounced back from a 2-2 record in pool play to mow down three straight elimination round opponents for the title.

Named to the All-Tournament team were Jim Spelbrink (.833), Bill Goedde (.761), Walt Shroyer (.737), Ron Huser (.611) and Charlie Riggs (.591).

“Bill also gave us an outstanding pitching performance,” commented player-manager Jim Spelbrink.  “And Walt Shroyer was tremendous in the leadoff spot.  Ron Huser was outstanding on defense, and Charlie Riggs gave us a boost with his clutch hitting in the final game.”

Joseph lost two one-run games in the last inning in round robin play, including a 14-13 setback to to Joe Corbi’s (Md.) 14-13 and and a tough 9-8 loss to the Jersey Jaguars.

But Joseph took control in the elimination tournament, outslugging Cleveland 19-14 in their opener, then pounding the New York Statesmen 17-4 before polishing off Cleveland 14-12.

Six Joseph players are in the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame, including Jim Spelbrink, Jim Wessel, Walt Shroyer, Bill Goedde, Ron Garnett and Jim Zink.
